Tech Tip #28 Upload vs. Download Speeds

Tip # 28

TECH TIP TUESDAYS!

Every Tuesday, we’re breaking down quick, helpful info about all things tech—because let’s face it, the internet isn’t always easy to understand.

Let’s go! 👇

Upload vs. Download Speeds: What Do They Actually Mean?

By Olivia Wells, Marketer at LigTel

Most people think internet speed is just one big number.

You see “300 Mbps,” “600 Mbps,” or “1 Gig” and think, Okay… but what does that actually mean for me?

Here’s the thing: your internet speed has two main jobs.

It helps bring things to you.

And it helps send things from you.

That’s where download and upload speeds come in.

Download Speed: Bringing Things To You

Download speed is how fast your internet pulls information from the internet to your device.

Think of it like ordering food at a restaurant. Download speed is how quickly the food gets brought to your table.

Download speed affects things like:

  • streaming Netflix or YouTube
  • loading websites
  • scrolling Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok
  • downloading apps, games, or files
  • watching online videos
  • receiving emails

So when people say, “My internet is fast,” they are usually thinking about download speed.

And download speed definitely matters. Netflix recommends at least 15 Mbps for streaming in 4K Ultra HD, and that is just for one stream. If your home has multiple people streaming, gaming, scrolling, and working at the same time, those speed needs can add up quickly. Source: Netflix

Upload Speed: Sending Things From You

Upload speed is how fast your internet sends information from your device back out to the internet.

Using the restaurant example again, upload speed is like sending your order back to the kitchen. It’s the information leaving you.

Upload speed affects things like:

  • video calls
  • sending photos or videos
  • uploading files
  • posting on social media
  • backing up pictures to the cloud
  • online gaming
  • working from home
  • sending security camera footage
  • using smart home devices

Upload speed used to be the speed most people forgot about.

Honestly, for a long time, that made sense. Most people were mainly using the internet to watch, browse, read, and download.

But now? We send a lot more than we used to.

We video call.
We work from home.
We upload photos.
We back up phones.
We game online.
We use cameras, smart TVs, laptops, tablets, and smart home devices all at once.

Suddenly, upload speed matters a lot more.

Another Way To Remember It

Here’s the easiest way to think about it:

Download speed = how fast things come to you.
Upload speed = how fast things leave you.

Or even simpler:

Download helps you receive. Upload helps you send.

So Where Does Fiber Come In?

So where does fiber come in?

Many internet connections are built with much faster download speeds than upload speeds. That means your internet may be pretty good at bringing things to you, but not as strong when you need to send things out.

Fiber is different.

LigTel fiber offers symmetrical speeds, which means your download and upload speeds are the same.

1 Gig download
and
1 Gig upload

That means your internet is built to handle both sides of the conversation.

Not just streaming.
Not just scrolling.
But video calling, sending, sharing, uploading, gaming, and working too.

Is Fiber Really Faster Than Cable or DSL?

In most cases, yes. But the bigger difference is not just speed. It’s how fiber handles speed.

Cable and DSL can get you online, but they are not built the same way fiber is. Fiber is designed to move large amounts of data quickly, and one of its biggest advantages is that it can offer more balanced upload and download speeds.

The catch? Fiber is not available everywhere. BroadbandNow notes that one drawback of symmetrical speeds is limited availability, since fiber has to be built in an area before customers can access it.

That is why LigTel continues to invest in bringing fiber to more homes and businesses in the communities we serve. And if LigTel fiber is available at your address, you have access to something many people are still waiting for: fast speeds both ways.

The BIG Takeaway

Download speed gets a lot of attention, and for good reason. It helps with streaming, browsing, and loading.

But upload speed matters too.

It helps with video calls, file sharing, cloud backups, gaming, working from home, and all the ways we send information every day.

So when you hear that LigTel fiber has symmetrical speeds, now you know what that means:

Your internet is built to send and receive.

And in today’s connected homes, that makes a big difference.
