Before You Dig… Make This Call First

Before You Dig… Make This Call First

By Olivia Wells, Marketer at LigTel

Spring projects are starting up — fences, landscaping, planting trees…

But before you grab a shovel, there’s one step you don’t want to skip:

Call Indiana 811.

Why it matters

Digging without knowing what’s below can lead to:

🚧 Internet outages (yours… and your neighbors’)
🚧 Costly repairs
🚧 Delays to your project
🚧 Safety risks

And it happens more often than you think.

“Nearly 1,000 utility lines are damaged daily due to digging…”
WTHI-TV (Indiana)

Here’s the part most people don’t realize — underground lines aren’t always buried very deep. Some can be just a few inches below the surface, especially communication lines. So even a small project can turn into a big problem fast.

That’s why 811 exists.

Indiana 811 says:

“You must contact 811 at least two full working days prior to excavation…”

This gives crews time to come out and mark where it’s safe to dig using flags or paint.

And if a line does get hit, it’s not just your service. You could take out internet for your entire street, leave your neighbors without connection, and cause repairs that take time to fix. Not exactly the kind of attention you want 😅

Quick tip:

  • Call or submit your request online
  • Wait at least 2 business days
  • Look for flags/paint marking the lines

Then you’re good to go 👍
