TECH TIP TUESDAYS!

Every Tuesday, we’re breaking down quick, helpful info about all things tech—because let’s face it, the internet isn’t always easy to understand.
Today’s tech tip:
Why Videos Buffer (and How to Fix It)

Let’s go! 👇

Why does my video keep buffering?

BY JOSH WENTWORTH, CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER FOR LIGTEL & OLIVIA WELLS, LIGTEL MARKETER

We’ve all been there—you’re in the middle of your favorite show and suddenly the dreaded spinning wheel appears. That pause is called buffering. But what exactly causes it, and how can you fix it?

What Is Buffering?

When you watch a video online, your streaming app loads small chunks of the video ahead of time. This helps the video start quickly and play smoothly, even if your internet slows down for a second.

If buffering takes too long, though, you’ll notice pauses, freezes, or the spinning circle on your screen.

Why Videos Buffer

Buffering can happen for a few reasons:

  • 🌐 Streaming service issues (busy servers or long distances)
  • 📶 Weak Wi-Fi signal or too many devices connected at once
  • 🐢 Internet speed too slow, especially for live streams that need stronger upload speeds
  • 📱 Older devices that can’t handle today’s HD or 4K quality
  • 🎥 Watching in higher quality (HD or 4K needs more speed)
Quick Fixes for Buffering

If you’re seeing frequent pauses, try these tips:

  • 🔌 Plug your device into the router with an Ethernet cable instead of using Wi-Fi.
  • ⬇ Lower the video quality (for example, switch from 4K to HD).
  • 🚪 Close apps or devices that are using the internet in the background.
  • 🔄 Restart your TV, streaming stick, or app.
  • 🧹 Clear your app’s cache and make sure software is updated.
How Much Speed Do You Need?

Here’s a quick guide for smooth streaming at your device:

Recommended Speeds for On-Demand Video

  • Standard Definition (SD) 480p : 3 Mbps
  • High Definition (HD) 720–1080p : 5 Mbps
  • Ultra-High Definition (UHD) 2K–4K : 25 Mbps

Recommended Speeds for Live Video

  • Standard Definition (SD) 480p : 8 Mbps
  • High Definition (HD) 720–1080p : 40 Mbps
  • Ultra-High Definition (UHD) 2K–4K : 80 Mbps

💡 Live video uses more bandwidth since it’s happening in real time.

LigTel Fiber Advantage

The good news? With LigTel Fiber, even our base package can easily handle 1–2 devices streaming at once. Most buffering issues come from Wi-Fi limits, not your fiber connection.
