Why Local Internet Matters More Than You Think
It’s not just about connection — it’s about community
By Olivia Wells, Marketer at LigTel
Most people don’t think too much about their internet provider.
Usually, it’s simple.
If it’s working, no one thinks twice about it.
You stream your shows, scroll your phone, hop on a work call, help with homework, and move on with your day.
But once you really stop and think about it… internet touches almost everything now.
And after sitting in on today’s Community Broadband Panel with local providers and community leaders, one thing stood out loud and clear:
Good internet isn’t a luxury anymore. It’s essential.
It Starts With Everyday Life
Internet is part of almost everything we do now.
It’s how we:
- work from home
- help kids with school
- run businesses
- stay connected with family
It even powers things people don’t always think about—security systems, farm technology, church livestreams, cloud storage, card machines, smart devices… the list keeps growing.
Jayson Rainsberger, from LaGrange REMC shared it best:
“When the internet goes down, businesses stop.”
And honestly, that’s true.
It’s easy to think internet is just for entertainment until it’s suddenly not there.
It’s Bigger Than One House
What a lot of people don’t see is how much internet impacts the entire community.
Reliable internet helps businesses grow, keeps people working in small towns, helps students stay on track, and allows local employers to compete.
That was one of the biggest themes from the panel.
Strong internet access doesn’t just connect people.
It creates opportunity.

The Difference With Local
This part matters to me.
When your provider is local, you’re not calling into some mystery system hoping someone somewhere can help.
You’re working with people who know the roads.
Know the neighborhoods.
Know the weather.
Know the community.
People who care because they live here too.
Josh Wentworth from LigTel stated it best:
“We live here. We work here. We care here.”
That’s a pretty simple sentence, but it says a lot.
Because when something breaks, local companies take it personally.
When It Goes Down, It Matters
Internet outages aren’t just annoying anymore.
They can mean:
- a missed meeting
- a business interruption
- a student falling behind
- or losing connection with family
That’s why response time matters.
That’s why support matters.
That’s why reliability matters.
Not just flashy ads or intro pricing.
More Than a Monthly Bill
Local providers are usually doing more than providing service.
They’re sponsoring little league teams.
Supporting events.
Helping nonprofits.
Investing back into infrastructure.
Showing up when the community needs them.
That matters too.
Because at the end of the day, choosing local often means supporting the place you live.
And maybe that’s the real point.
Internet is important.
But the people behind it matter just as much.
Because… Connection means more here.
