4 Reasons Fiber Internet Is Worth It

(If You Can Get It)

By Olivia Wells, LigTel Marketer

If you’ve been following along lately, you’ve probably heard us talk about fiber internet a lot.

There’s a reason for that.

CNET called fiber internet the “gold standard” of broadband and said it’s “the fastest, by far.” (CNET, July 22, 2025)

But what actually makes fiber different?

1. It’s Incredibly Fast — In Both Directions

Most internet types focus on download speeds.

Fiber delivers symmetrical speeds, meaning your upload speeds can match your download speeds.

That matters more than you think.

Uploading Large Files

Video Calls

Cloud Backups

Working From Home

Gaming & Streaming

Cable and wireless connections often have much slower upload speeds. Fiber doesn’t.

💡

Light in fiber can travel:

1 mile in ~8 microseconds

(0.000008 seconds)

Kendallville to Indy in ~1 millisecond

2. It Uses Light to Transmit Data

Light in a fiber-optic cable can travel 100 miles in less than 1 millisecond.

That’s why it:

  • Handles heavy usage better
  • Reduces lag (latency)
  • Feels more responsive overall

It’s not just about “higher numbers” on a speed test. It’s about how your connection actually feels when you’re using it.

3. It’s More Reliable Long-Term

Unlike older copper-based systems, fiber infrastructure is built to last.

As Gary Bolton, president of the Fiber Broadband Association, told CNET:

Fiber lines don’t degrade the same way older cable and DSL systems do. Once installed, they’re designed to serve communities for decades. That’s why you often here us say fiber is future-proof.

4. It’s the Direction Broadband Is Headed

According to the Fiber Broadband Association’s 2024 report, fiber now passes over 88 million U.S. homes — with more than 35 million already connected.

Even the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recognized the need for faster, more advanced broadband infrastructure nationwide.

In simple terms: fiber isn’t a trend. It’s the future.

But Here’s the Catch

Fiber isn’t available everywhere.

In fact, less than half the country currently has access to it. Rural areas are often the last to get it.

So if fiber is available at your address, that’s not something to overlook.
