History of WNRL-LP
WNRL-LP came to be after lots of hard work by the Board of
Directors of the Indiana Historic Radio Museum (IHRM). Curator of the IHRM
(Fred 'Fritz' Schultz), said in an interview with Rebecca Whitesel of Senior Life that "The museum
fit in just perfect (to acquire a license for low power FM transmission).
It's the only museum dedicated entirely to the radio that has its own radio
station."
Fritz' daughter, the late Marcella Schultz, spent over four
and a half years butting heads with FCC and congressional officials to
allow more low power stations to broadcast. Marcella did this because
WNRL-LP was cutout of the original Low Power FM bill. "Marcella played
an important role nationally in low power FM, about which many people are
unaware. The WNRL-LP application (to broadcast) was one of the infamous
"appendix B" applications, for frequencies that were good
according to the FCC, but outlawed by Congress. For years, Marcella pushed
to get her opportunity to amend and change the channel (WNRL-LP) to another
frequency. Marcella successfully enlisted the assistance of the office of
Senator Evan Bayh. Bayh's office called the FCC regularly on this matter
until they finally opened up the amendment window of Appendix B applicants.
Prometheus (a low power FM supporter) usually gets credit for this sort of
thing, because people know Prometheus all around the country, but the real
reason Appendix B frequencies got approved, is because of Marcella's
persistence. (Dunbar-Hester and
Tridish. "History of Community Radio Alive in Indiana"
Prometheus, 2005)"
WNRL-LP went on the air in January of 2004 on 105.9 FM.
WNRL-LP broadcasts at 60 watts from a 100 foot tower located at the West
Noble High
School. WNRL-LP went online and
around the world in January of 2006 using webcasting software.
WNRL-LP's tower was donated and installed by Emergency
Radio. The WNRL-LP tower is valued at over $10,000. Other community
resources have allowed WNRL-LP to purchase 3 computers for on-air play as
well as a Crown Transmitter. The Crown Transmitter is made in Elkhart,
IN and
is "The Cadillac" of transmitters according to Fritz Schultz.
WNRL-LP is also the proud owner of a mixer that can be used in conjunction
with a cell phone to allow WNRL-LP to broadcast live from anywhere in the
world. WNRL-LP has studios at both the West
Noble High
School, as well as the Ligonier Sports and Recreation
Center.
WNRL-LP is a community station, and thus run by the
community and staffed by volunteers. Anyone in the West Noble community can
get on WNRL-LP. A quick call to the WNRL-LP studio is all that it takes to
become involved in this great community resource.
The West
Noble High
School also goes on during the week
between 8am and noon. WNRL-LP is proud to allow the West
Noble High
School to use its airtime to allow
the station to become more involved in the community.
To become involved in WNRL-LP please see the information on
the contact page.
