Frequently Asked Questions
Do the Radio's in the IHRM work? Most of the radios in
the museum do work, many do require special batteries because 120 volt AC
radios didn’t appear until the late 1920's.
What are the radio's in the IHRM worth? Many of the radio's in
the IHRM have little, if no monetary value. The main value of many of the
radios in the IHRM is owning a piece of early radio history.
Are there other radio museums? There are many museums
that have radios in them, but there are very few museums dedicated entirely
to the radio. The IHRM prides itself in being one of the few museums in the
world dedicated entirely to radio.
Are any of the companies that made radios that
are in the IHRM still producing radios today? This is almost a trick
question. Some of these companies are still producing radios in some form
or another. Of the 1200 companies that existed at one time or another,
there are no American owned companies manufacturing radios or televisions
today.
Who owns the IHRM? The IHRM is part of the
Indiana Historical Radio Society. The Indiana Historical Radio Society was
established in 1971. The Radio Society started out with 13 original
members, and now has over 350 members. The Radio Society is the second
oldest collectors group in the United States. The oversight of
the IHRM is the responsibility of the elected curator, and an appointed
board of directors.
What is the oldest radio in the IHRM? At present, the oldest
radio in the IHRM is the 1898 Marconi Coherer.
